How does a DMP work?

A Debt Management Plan (DMP) is an informal arrangement based on what you can realistically afford. We assess your income and essential expenses to determine a sustainable monthly payment. You then make one single payment to us each month, and we deal with creditors on your behalf, distributing your payment fairly among them and requesting that interest and charges are frozen (though this isn’t guaranteed). Reduced payments mean it will take longer to clear your debts in full, but a DMP is flexible and can be adjusted if your circumstances change.

Benefits of a DMP

  • A Debt Management Plan allows you to pay what you can afford to your creditors each month.
  • You make one monthly payment, and we distribute your payment to your creditors on your behalf.
  • Creditors may agree to accept reduced payments and freeze or reduce interest charges.
  • We communicate with your creditors on your behalf.
  • Payments can be reviewed if your circumstances change.
  • A Debt Management Plan is flexible. You can leave the plan if your situation improves or another solution becomes more suitable.

Risks of a DMP

  • Creditors don't have to agree to the proposed payments.
  • Interest and charges may continue to be added.
  • You will need to repay your debts in full on a Debt Management Plan. Reduced payments mean it will take longer to repay your debts.
  • Making reduced payments will have a negative impact on your credit file. Creditors can issue default notices which will remain on your credit file for 6 years.
  • A Debt Management Plan does not prevent creditors from taking legal action or continuing collection activity.
  • Some debts, such as certain priority arrears, may not be suitable for a Debt Management Plan and may need to be dealt with separately.

It's never too late to seek help.

  • Regularly worrying about money
  • Struggling to pay household bills
  • Finances causing you stress
  • Relying on credit to make ends meet
  • Missing credit card or loan repayments
  • Struggling to make minimum payments
  • Feeling overwhelmed by money worries
  • Avoiding letters and calls from creditors

Two columns compared. Where I am now: I don't know where to turn with too many debts, on a base reading I was once debt free. What debt solutions can do for you: more manageable monthly payments; a clear plan for dealing with your debts; payments based on what you can afford; less pressure from juggling multiple debts; help communicating with creditors; a clearer picture of your finances; and professional support and guidance.

We explain the features of each debt solution, including the benefits and risks. Every conversation is confidential and without obligation, giving you the space to make an informed decision in your own time. No fee is charged for the initial advice. Fees apply if you enter a debt solution with us and will affect your credit rating. Some solutions may result in debt write-off.

Frequently asked questions about Debt Management Plans

What happens after I fill in the form?

Our team will call you to build a complete picture of your income, spending and debts. This conversation is completely confidential, and there is no obligation to proceed.

How soon will you contact me?

If you complete the form during office hours, we’ll usually call you the same day for a confidential chat. We’ll help you review your debts and budget and explain the debt solutions that may be suitable for your circumstances. You can also call us on 0161 532 2926 or email info@thedebtadvisor.hubsolv.com.

Is my initial advice free?

Yes. There is no fee to talk to us initially, but fees will apply if you enter a solution with us. There’s no obligation to proceed. We’ll take the time needed to understand your situation properly, explain your options and answer any questions you have, there’s no rush.

If you choose a solution, fees will apply and will be explained clearly before you proceed. IVA fees are normally agreed as part of the arrangement and paid from the contributions you make into your IVA. You can also access free and impartial debt advice from the Government’s MoneyHelper service.

Is The Debt Advisor regulated?

Yes. The Debt Advisor Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority to provide debt advice and administer certain debt solutions.

What happens if I miss a payment?

If you miss a payment to your debt management plan, the arrangements in plan could break. However, if you notify us, we can get in touch with your creditors for you and explain why. If you do struggle to maintain payments it is important that you contact us and we can review your circumstances and the solutions available to you.

What contact will I receive from my creditors?

A debt management plan is an informal plan and therefore does not prevent creditors from pursuing you in relation to payment or from taking further action. If your offers are approved by your creditors then correspondence should then reduce to statements in line with the Consumer Credit Act 1974. Other correspondence you could expect to receive is a default or notice of sums in arrears as you are not maintaining your contractual payments. In any solution it is important to share the creditor contact you receive with the provider assisting you to ensure that the information that is held is accurate and up to date.

Will a DMP affect my credit score?

Yes, a Debt Management Plan will affect your credit rating and creditors may record missed or reduced payments on your credit file.

Can a DMP reduce or freeze interest and charges?

Some creditors may agree to reduce or freeze interest and charges, but this isn’t guaranteed. As a DMP is an informal arrangement, creditors don’t have to accept the terms.

How long does a DMP last?

A DMP has no fixed end date and lasts for as long as it takes to repay your debts. The length of the plan depends on how much you owe and what you can afford to pay. Payments can be reviewed if your circumstances change.

Will a debt solution affect my job?

In most cases, no. However, an IVA or other formal debt solution may affect certain jobs, particularly in finance, law or roles requiring security clearance. If you’re unsure, check your employment contract or speak to your HR department.

What is the difference between unsecured and secured debt?

Unsecured debt is money you owe that isn’t secured against an asset, such as credit cards, personal loans and overdrafts. Secured debt is linked to an asset, such as your home or car, which may be at risk if you don’t keep up with repayments. Most formal debt solutions mainly deal with unsecured debts.

Important information

The Debt Advisor is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. This means we can provide debt advice and administer both formal and informal debt solutions for individuals and business owners. No fee is charged for initial advice. However, we are a commercial organisation and if you choose a solution we provide, fees will apply and will be clearly explained to you.

We will talk you through all the solutions available in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This includes solutions like Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs), Bankruptcy, Debt Relief Orders, Debt Management Plans, and Debt Consolidation (subject to eligibility), to help you understand which may be most suitable for your circumstances. If you live in Scotland, different solutions apply, please visit Scottish Debt Solutions.

All debt solutions should be very carefully considered. You may fall into arrears, or incur further arrears, while we are negotiating reduced payments with your creditors, as you will not be maintaining your contractual payments. Payments made to creditors under a Debt Management Plan with The Debt Advisor are distributed within five working days. Payments made into an IVA are distributed in line with the terms of the proposal. If you enter an IVA, Debt Relief Order or Bankruptcy, your personal information will appear on the Insolvency Register, which is searchable by the public.
