You’re not alone. I’ve no doubt we all, in some way or another, can relate to the feeling of ‘frazzled’. Having just handed in my 42,000 word dissertation, I certainly can and I feel now is the perfect time to reflect back on the past couple of months and how I coped with what seemed like the most stressful period of my life to date.
The human brain is amazing. It is truly an extraordinary tool that I can now entirely appreciate with the help of and thanks to Dr Jack Lewis and Adrian Webster. The world renowned neuroscientist and motivational business speaker are the combined brains behind my latest life-saving discovery ‘Sort Your Brain Out’. A book I now realise saved me from going into over-drive and completely crashing after my 16 hour shifts in the library, on more than one occasion.
This book opened my eyes to how unbelievably brilliant and powerful our brains actually are, and the simple yet effective ways in which we can look after this wonderful tool.
To put into perspective just how amazing our brains are let’s take a clearer look into what is actually up there. The London underground has, at this moment in time, a combined track length of 250 miles, with tube trains travelling between 270 stations at a top speed of 70mph. However, if all of your brain wires were to be laid out end to end, they would make up approximately 100,000 miles with hundreds of thousands of trillions of trains all travelling up and down, bang on time at a speed of 250 mph. If all of these wires were laid out as an underground train network, it would cover an area of 561,476 square miles… an area greater than that of South Africa, and all tucked into a space smaller than your average pumpkin. Mind blowing.
If you are struggling with your stress levels, or just need some information on how to keep your head above water and stay positive then here are some top tips, referred to by Lewis and Webster as ‘brain optimisation tips’ (BOP’s). These five pointers will get your brain firing on all cylinders each and every day.
‘BOPS’ – BRAIN OPTIMISATION TIPS
Start everyday by making a conscious effort to drink water, simple. Your brain is 73% water and it needs this rehydration to send all your electrical messages around the 100,000 miles of brain a day.
Exercise. Any form of moderately demanding exercise will cause your brain to release a wealth of hormones and brain chemicals proven to make you feel good. A minimum of 20 minutes moderate to intense exercise every other day will do the trick.
Control your cortisol, manage your stress. Stress is good, however chronic stress is most definitely bad. Actively set aside some YOU time, sit somewhere quiet and take a few minutes to picture whatever it is that lies ahead, concentrate on your breathing – in for 7, out for 11. Don’t let your cortisol levels take over, be in control of your body.
Sunshine. UV light is proven to produce vitamin D in the body, this in turn releases the wonderful brain chemical of serotonin which improves mood levels. Get your skin in daylight for at least 5-15 minutes every day
Caffeine. Believe it or not, moderate consumption of caffeinated beverages are good for the brain. Get yourself one or two really good cups of coffee a day.
You can find the book ‘Sort Your Brain Out’ from most book stores, or alternatively you can purchase this book via Amazon for as little as £2. Know your brain and start your journey to a healthier and happier life today.
